The importance of soil health and mulch, and one of the correct methods of creating a garden bed, is essential.. #nodiggarden #ecogarden
With this project, I started with a bricked rectangle shaped garden bed, that had rocks, gravel and sand at the bottom.. not ideal!
First step: I levelled out the bottom of the garden bed then added cardboard, newspaper and straw to the bottom of the bed on top of the gravel etc.. this will break down after a bit of time and brief the soil, and the reasoning of this generally is to not disturb the soil structure beneath the ground.
Second step: I added a general and neutral garden soil mix to the bed.
Third step: I added compost and manure then mixed it in with the garden soil, and filled the soil mixture to the top of the garden bed.
Fourth step: I added straw to the top of the garden bed and mixed it with the soil but just close to the surface.. this will help with keeping the temperature of the garden bed warm, water retention, nutrients washing away and keeps weeds out..
Irrigation will go in after, and these garden beds are used as a cutting garden..
A no dig garden is beneficial because it promotes soil health by preserving its natural structure and microorganisms, which enhances plant growth.. By layering organic matter like compost on the surface, this method suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and reduces erosion. Additionally, it requires less physical labor and avoids disturbing the soil’s ecosystem, leading to healthier plants and a more sustainable gardening practice…
